Manchester United superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo warned the club’s board he would leave at the end of the season if they appointed Ralf Rangnick as permanent manager, according to ESPN.
Rangnick was appointed United’s interim manager of the Red Devils in December, following the sack of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked after a series of poor results from his side who were sliding down the middle of the Premier League table.
Rangnick’s appointment came to many football lovers as a surprise for the fact that the German has no CV worthy of the job and the results did not get better under him.
The German started steadily but things changed for the worse quickly, with widespread reports of discontent among senior members of the squad.
For these reasons, Ronaldo’s future at Old Trafford has been a subject of speculation.
But the appointment of former Ajax coach, Erik ten Hag, who is now in charge of the club, seems to have calmed the rumours.
Although there were talks about the 37-year-old not being an ideal fit for the Dutchman’s preferred playing style, the 52-year-old has insisted Ronaldo will play a key role in his squad next season.
Ten Hag said he wants to keep the veteran forward happy to stay at the Theatre of Dreams.
According to the report, Ronaldo would have opted to leave the Premier League giants had they decided to stick with Rangnick.
United did consider keeping the former Leipzig’s manager in place if they were unable to attract either Ten Hag or Mauricio Pochettino.
And had that been the case, ESPN claimed that the former Real Madrid goal king would have left and he told United’s board as early as last January.
The report claimed that the Portugal international was unimpressed with Rangnick and felt undermined by comments he had made to the media, with the German questioning the work-rate of United’s attacking players.
The 37-year-old was also not fond of Rangnick’s backroom staff and felt that they were not of the necessary quality to take the club back to the top.
